Winter Solstice To Fall Today

Winter Solstice

December 21 will be the shortest day and longest night of the year. This phenomenon is referred to as Winter Solstice. Dr B.G. Sidharth, director of Birla Planetarium Science Centre said, "Traditionally, a few thousand years back, this day was observed as the new year.

On this day, as the sun's ark along the earth is very low, not much of the radiation hits the earth. Thus, there is not much of daytime and more of night. The day coincides with the winter season in the northern hemisphere. In countries like Australia that witness summer in December, the night will be short and day will be longer."
